Connie’s Memorial Service 2.00pm Sunday April 3rd

We hope you’ve booked your place for attending this event, as any additional people are having to go on a waiting list at present. It may help you to know that as we are organising a recording of the service, we are planning a further opportunity to watch it at church on a later date for those unable to come for whatever reason. It will also be available to anyone who wishes to see it on a computer in their own home.

In the meantime, the Tuesday Caring and Sharing group are working hard to provide the refreshments on the 3rd April and would welcome offers of scones and cakes. Please let Ann Dawber know if you are able to help in this way – or just bring things along on the day.

Welcome Group

We are taking a break from the Welcome Group for three weeks over the Easter holidays, finishing on 29th March and restarting on 26th April. Many of our volunteers have child caring responsibilities when the schools are off. We are also thinking through the consequences of the news that the hotel has been contracted to provide accommodation for asylum seekers as they move through the system for at least another year. The need for what we offer hasn’t changed. Between 25 and 50 people – newborns to middle aged folk - have come each week, seeking a change, someone to listen, a chance to learn some English, have some fun and a warm welcome. And we learn from them about their countries and traditions, their worries about their families, what they miss doing and would like to be able to do again. If you are interested in joining the band of volunteers or would like to know more, please get in touch.

At present across the Middle East it is the celebration of Nowruz, welcoming the Spring, often called the Persian New Year. So, Nowruz Mubarak to you – or Happy New Year.

Catriona and Andy Stoker

Thank you to all who make this possible – the Property Group, led by Dave Bryant, keeping the premises and equipment in good repair and the licenses for people who rent rooms in good order; our cleaner, Lynda McGaw, keeping the premises clean and those vital things like toilet rolls and paper towels in place; Pat currently managing bookings and Peter who sets the heating and manages keys for the building; Jane Hollins, our Treasurer who ensures payments are made and receipted, and sorts out buildings insurance, Linda Norbury our Safeguarding Officer who helps look at the safety of our premises, be it food hygiene, or door guards and Andy Stoker, our Covid risk assessor who has helped our building users open up again in safety. In addition, there are those who help out opening up, tidying and sorting flowers and banners in the sanctuary, and not forgetting the work Eric Osborn has been doing in putting new rubber stoppers on our chair legs.

Christian Aid Week May 15th – 21st

This year’s Christian Aid appeal focusses on the extra burden that climate change is placing on small farmers in many parts of the South.

Dialstone Lane is again distributing envelopes in the area for people to deliver back to us with their gifts and running a plant stall.

The plant stall will run on Saturday 14th, Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th from 11.00 - 2.00 each time. There will be plenty of bedding plants, perennial flowers, vegetable and tomato plants, herbs, strawberries and houseplants. If you have some surplus plants, we’d welcome donations and please advertise in the neighbourhood. Contacting local Facebook groups brought in a lot of buyers last year. We also need people to help run the stall, which will be held outside the front of the church. Please talk to Lesley Fennell if you can help with the stall, deliver envelopes or provide some plants – 07858 666480.

Traidcraft

Thank you to all who came to the Traidcraft coffee morning, part of the Stockport-wide Fairtrade Fortnight events, at the end of February. Over £275 worth of Traidcraft goods were purchased and the raffle and refreshments raised £101 to send to Traidcraft Exchange. It is the charitable arm of Traidcraft which campaigns for Trade Justice on behalf of poor farmers and craftspeople.

I still have various Easter eggs and Easter cards so if anyone would like to know what is available do contact me - Catriona Stoker on 487 2010/email: cat.stoker@btinternet.com
